Dinosaur Silhouettes

One day, I will like to design a dinosaur-themed nursery.  Until then, I’ll satisfy my inner tomboy by painting a few of these dino silhouettes for around the house!  Why not hang up paintings that make you feel like a kid again, right? These silhouettes are easy and fun to make.  They are also available at my Etsy shop as perfect gifts for kids’ bedrooms and play rooms.

To make your own silhouettes, you’ll need a white canvas, one craft paint color of your choice, one small and one medium-sized craft paint brush, a piece of paper, a pencil, and scissors.  Then, Google a silhouette of whichever dinosaur you’d like to make.  I chose to paint a guacamole green Stegosaurus for this tutorial.

Brighten up your laptop or computer screen as high as it’ll go, and then lightly trace the silhouette onto a sheet of paper with a pencil.  Try to be as accurate as possible.

Then, cut out the silhouette using a pair of scissors or X-acto knife.

Using the stencil as a guide, trace around the silhouette with a pencil.  Be sure to do this lightly, especially if you plan on painting the background a bright color — otherwise, the pencil marks will bleed through.

Then, have fun painting in the background!  I like to use a smaller craft brush for the details around the silhouette, and then a medium-sized one to fill in the rest.  Depending on the color you chose, it may take between 3-5 coats of paint.

And here is the finished product!

This silhouette makes me smile.  I love how it turned out.

I made a few others, as well!  Here’s a yellow triceratops:
And a Brachiasaurus:
Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!  If you want to check out even more silhouettes, take a look at these ones I made of our dogs.
