Wedding Nostalgia, Part I: Details

I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic lately, especially after I went through a bunch of wedding photos for a collage that I’m creating for our foyer.  Since I haven’t talked about our wedding on my blog yet, I thought I’d share the event with you!  Today will focus on the details of the wedding, tomorrow will be centered on the wedding morning prep, Thursday will concentrate on the ceremony, and then Friday will highlight the reception.  Hope you’ll enjoy my little digression from paint and power tools!

We got married at Meadowlark Botanic Gardens in Vienna, VA on July 24, 2010.  It was the hottest day of the year.  I believe that it got up to 108 degrees around midday.  It was the type of humidity that fogged up your sunglasses every time you stepped outside!  Our original plans were to have an outdoor ceremony on the patio, which overlooks the gardens.  Given the temperature, we nixed that idea, and held both the ceremony and reception indoors in Meadowlark’s Atrium.

Our wedding colors were red, white, and silver.  We chose the caterer’s standard white tablecloths and added a sheer silver overlay over them.  Red napkins served as pops of color for the tables.

To ease stress, we didn’t make pre-arranged seating or table cards.  Everyone got to choose where they wanted to sit, and who they wanted to sit with, when they arrived.

The only flowers that we bought from the florist were the bouquets, boutineers, and red gerbera daisies for the cake and centerpieces.  Our centerpieces were simple: a few gerbera daisies floating in a bowl surrounded by tealights.  We brought our own potted orchids to serve as added arrangements.

My mom made bows for each row at the ceremony.  Since the ceremony was brought indoors at the last minute, we just scattered the bows everywhere for decoration.

Our favors consisted of M&M pouches with our names and faces on them.  It’s a running joke for my dad that the most expensive thing we had were these favors.  The kids loved them!

Our caterer prepared sparkling water with fresh berries for all of the guests.

We got our wedding cake and groom’s cake from Edible’s Incredible in Reston, VA.  At our cake tasting, we couldn’t decide which flavor we liked best because they were all equally amazing!  To resolve this, we decided to get different flavors.  The main cake’s bottom layer was Chocolate Fudge Supreme, the middle was Vivacious Vanilla, and the top was Strawberry Delight.  It was our little Neapolitan cake.

Meanwhile, Evan’s Washington Capitals groom’s cake was Lemon Sublime.

Stay tuned for the pre-wedding photos tomorrow!
