Pet Silhouettes

I owe the creativity and inspiration of this project to Karah at The Space Between. She made silhouette canvases of her two pups, and I was amazed by how beautiful yet simple they were!  I knew I just had to make them for my Corgis.

First, I went on Facebook to find any full-body profile photos of Zubrus and Crash (yes, my pups have Facebook accounts… don’t judge me).  I had a really hard time trying to find eligible photos!  It seemed as though all of the ones available were of this type:

Or this sad accident:
Or this classic:
Or… this:
After much deliberation, I settled on these two:
I enlarged these photos to fit a full 8’11” piece of paper and printed them.  Then, using an X-Acto knife, I cut out the pups’s images, trying to capture as many details as possible.  The tip of Crash’s ear was cropped in the photo, so I improvised an ear for him.
Once done, I placed each pup on a roughly 8’10” white canvas.

Then, I traced a light outline around the picture using a pencil.
Time to paint!  I used a black acrylic paint for Zubie’s canvas and a dark silver acrylic paint for Crash’s.  You can really choose any color, but I figured that these would serve as a good neutral against my bright walls.  I used a cheapy acrylic tiny brush for the details and and a larger brush for the rest of the blank space (can you tell that I’m not an artist?).
And… that’s it!  This project was super easy.  We relaxed and watched a movie while I painted.

What do you think?  I adore them!  You could make similar silhouettes for your pets, family, and friends, too!  Thank you, Karah, for the inspiration!

  3. Thanks, Pam! Seriously, these were super easy. It took me about two hours to make them, and that was because I was preoccupied with watching a movie, as well. I hope you make them, too! They'll look great!
